Houston Receives JDAI Grant

The Annie E. Casey Foundation has given a $300,000 grant to Texas’s Harris County, which includes the Houston metropolitan area, to address overcrowding in its juvenile detention facilities and develop alternatives to incarceration. The foundation, under program director Bart Lubow, has set up similar programs in eighty-five communities throughout the United States through its impressive Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI). It’s a successful model, based on extensive research and smart policy, and could, with support, grow to become the national standard. I’m glad to hear that Texas has caught the spark.
