Civil Rights Celebs Speak Out on Jena Six

Two of America’s most visible civil rights advocates are putting their celebrity weight behind the Jena Six defense and helping to keep the case in the news. Over the weekend Al Sharpton called for an investigation of Reed Walters, the (unashamedly racist) district attorney who’s prosecuting the case. And on Sunday Jesse Jackson was in Jena to give a speech and meet with 17-year-old defendant Mychal Bell and the LaSalle Parish sheriff–he had hoped to talk to Walters, but the DA didn’t make himself available. “American justice is on trial” in Jena, Jackson pronounced. “Either we’re all winners, or all losers.” Both men have said they will join protesters in Jena on September 20, the day Bell is scheduled to receive his sentence for aggravated second-degree battery.
